THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS

A recent study has shown that singing in a choir makes you feel good, and it does – VV members, for example, are required to reaffirm their happiness at every rehearsal. But we believe choral music makes audiences happy too, and aim to prove this at St Matt’s in March. To do so, we’ll blend the Renaissance delights of Lassus, Wilbye and Tomkins with the later pleasures of Herzogenberg and Finzi, while adding upbeat spirituals, popular numbers and, for the coup de grâce, Monteverdi’s wonderfully joyous ‘Beatus vir’ with Baroque ensemble. Our title suggests a self-help concert, but we’ll do all the work; all you need do is have a good time!

VV GOES TO THE OPERA

It’s been a full 19 years since our (anti-)homage to music theatre, ‘Don’t Put Your Choir on the Stage’, so it may be time for a rethink. In the meantime, many of us have trodden the operatic stage and our own conductor has completed 23 years at the helm of the NZ Opera Chorus; indeed, VV has mounted several productions itself. Why not, then, share with you our love of this passionate, complex and thoroughly engrossing art form, processed of course through the infamous Viva Voce lens! Thrill to your favourite opera choruses by Verdi, Puccini, Mozart, Wagner and Bizet, while enjoying a few surprises along the way. Colourful and captivating!

PEOPLE AND THE LAND

You may not recognise this title now, but we hope it’ll become familiar soon. It’s the theme for the World Symposium on Choral Music to be held in Auckland next July – the biggest choir event to come to our shores in… well, ever! Our director’s in the thick of this one too, and he’d like us to do our own, unique take on the subject before 24 international guest choirs are let loose on it in 2020. It’s a theme that lies at the heart of what it means to be a New Zealander, calling to mind the relationship humans have with the land that supports them, and with each other. We won’t give any more away just yet; no need to offer next year’s visitors too much advance help!

Song and Dance

In a fitting end to an exciting year, let us swing you breathlessly (if metaphorically) across the concert floor, dipping and swirling to bourées, boleros and beguines by such choral dance masters as Bach, Byrd and Britten; Pilkington, Porter and Piazzolla; Hassler, Holstand Hamilton. Come, trip the light fantastic with us, as we show you why at one time ‘chorus’ and ‘dance’ meant the same thing… and in some ways still do!
